The establishment of the Global Health AI Computing Lab at KCCR-KNUST (GHAiC-K) marks an important step in Ghana’s emerging AI and healthcare ecosystem. More importantly, it raises a question we must ask as AI moves deeper into healthcare: Are we building AI that understands our context?

Healthcare AI holds enormous promise—from medical imaging and diagnosis to clinical decision support, disease surveillance and patient care. But technology alone is not enough.

AI systems are only as useful as the data, context and expertise behind them. A model developed elsewhere may not fully reflect Ghana’s disease patterns, health systems, patient populations, languages or resource realities.

This is why initiatives such as GHAiC-K matter.

Ghana needs the capacity not only to use AI, but to research, develop, test and validate AI solutions within our own health environment. That requires collaboration between clinicians, researchers, data scientists, engineers, policymakers and communities.

It also aligns with a central message emerging from the Ghana AI Summit & Awards: the future of AI must be grounded in real local challenges and local data. The Ghana AI Innovation Challenge demonstrated this potential, with more than 100 solutions submitted using Ghanaian datasets and Omaya Care ultimately winning with an AI-powered maternal healthcare solution designed around Ghanaian realities.

GHAiC-K represents another important piece of this emerging ecosystem. The opportunity before Ghana is not simply to become a consumer of healthcare AI.
