The FATE Foundation and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), with support from Google.org, have launched the Africa AI Upskilling Programme in Ghana to strengthen artificial intelligence (AI) education and equip young Africans with the skills to develop solutions to local challenges.
The programme was launched at a breakfast event in Accra at the Ghana Communication and Technology University on Monday, bringing together technology leaders, policy-makers, representatives of higher education institutions, academics, creatives and young innovators to explore the advancement of Al education and the development of institutional capacity to support Africa's growing Al ecosystem.
The initiative, which is being implemented in Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, will target higher education institutions, lecturers, teaching assistants and STEM students, with the aim of strengthening Al teaching, learning and applied research

At the launch, FATE Foundation's Head of Digital Innovation, Oluchi Johnson-Achibiri, said the programme would help Africa build the human capacity needed to shape its AI future.
She noted that while Africa has the world's youngest population and a fast-growing digital economy, gaps remain in advanced digital and Al skills. Al, she said, offers opportunities to boost productivity, expand employment and entrepreneurship, and create solutions for African realities.
Through a Train-the-Trainer model, the Africa Al Upskilling Programme will equip educators with the knowledge, mentorship and resources to teach and apply AT in ways relevant to African contexts. The model is designed to strengthen institutions and create capacity that can grow beyond one classroom, campus or country.

Mohammed Adams Sukparu, said for Ghana, this agenda aligns with our broader efforts to strengthen the country's digital and technological capabilities. The government recognises artificial intelligence as an important component of Ghana's digital transformation and national development agenda. In April 2026, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama launched the National Al Strategy with 8 key pillars to guide our quest to become an Al hub within the sub-region.
He further encouraged the trainers and educators participating in this programme to use the skills they acquire to support their colleagues, integrate them into their teaching, create opportunities for their students to experiment and innovate, and where they identify challenges that require further support, work with their institutions and partners to develop solutions.

As part of the programme's implementation, a week-long Train-the-Trainer workshop, running from August 24 to 28, 2026, is bringing together lecturers and teaching assistants from KNUST, the University of Education, Winneba, the University of Business pnd Integrated Development Studies and the Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU). The training is designed to equip participating educators to adapt and deliver the Al Research Foundations curriculum to students in their respective institutions.
