Husker AI a student-led team comprising two students from the Department of Computer Science, KNUST and a student from the Department of Business Administration, has emerged as the winner of the 2026 Pan African AI Summit Hack-AI-Thon.

The team, comprising Frank Agyare and Caleb Antwi (Computer Science) and Wilhelmina Adjah (Business Administration) received a US$1,000 cash prize and special startup mentorship after taking first place in the competition.

The Hack-AI-Thon formed part of the second edition of the Pan African AI Summit and brought together innovators and teams developing artificial intelligence-powered solutions to real-world challenges.

More than 200 applications were received for the competition before the field was narrowed to 25 teams that pitched their solutions at the AI Hub in Accra. Five finalists subsequently advanced to the final stage and presented their solutions before a panel of judges and investors where Husker AI was named the winner.

Husker AI is an agritech solution that seeks to help cocoa farmers turn cocoa pod husks, which are often discarded, burned or left to decompose, into an additional source of income.

Through a mobile platform, farmers can scan cocoa pod husks using their smartphones. The system is designed to estimate the quantity of husks, assess their quality, provide an estimated market value in Ghana cedis and connect farmers with potential buyers.

The platform is being developed with smallholder farmers in mind, incorporating features such as offline functionality and support for local languages, including Twi, Ewe and Fante.

The solution also seeks to connect farmers to businesses that can use cocoa pod husks as raw materials for products such as animal feed, organic fertiliser and biochar, addressing both market access and the underutilisation of agricultural waste.

The latest recognition builds on an earlier achievement by the team at the Ghana AI Innovation Challenge, where Husker AI emerged as runner-up and received a Certificate of Commendation for its solution.

The success also highlights the contribution of KNUST students to emerging AI innovation.
