The Responsible AI Lab | RAIL welcomed Mr. Thapelo Sindane, a PhD student at the University of Pretoria’s Data Science for Social Impact Research Lab, for a one-week Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) Knowledge Exchange visit. The visit formed part of the Artificial Intelligence for Development (AI4D) Africa programme’s mandate to promote knowledge exchange, collaboration, and interaction among participating research laboratories across Africa.

During his stay, Mr. Sindane engaged with researchers and students at Responsible AI Lab | RAIL and the wider Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi (KNUST) research community. He participated in research discussions and knowledge-sharing sessions in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and language technologies. He also shared aspects of his doctoral research and explored opportunities for collaboration and stronger research networks between the respective institutions and laboratories.

Mr. Sindane’s doctoral research focuses on developing translation technologies for South African Sign Language (SASL).

Responsible AI Lab | RAIL believes that the visit contributed to the objectives of the AI4D Africa programme by facilitating the exchange of technical knowledge, research practices, and expertise, while strengthening collaboration among African researchers and institutions.
