Prof. Isaac Wiafe

Biography

He is a leading researcher and innovator dedicated to leveraging HCI, persuasive technology, and AI to address critical societal challenges. His research focuses on behavior change support systems and Large Language Models (LLMs) for low-resource languages, contributions that are reflected in over 60 peer-reviewed publications. In 2023, he led the UGSpeechData project, which developed parallel datasets for five Ghanaian languages. This work was a pivotal contribution to the development of Google's Akan voice search feature, released in November 2024. Currently, he is driving the development of culturally relevant AI solutions, including the first maternal health chatbot in Akan and assistive speech recognition systems for individuals with impaired speech. As the head of the HCI Lab at the University of Ghana, he fosters global research innovation through strategic partnerships with Google Research, UCL, and the University of Oulu.
